ITS Australia

Intelligent Transport Systems Australia (ITS Australia) promotes the development and deployment of advanced technologies to deliver safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable transport across all public and private modes – air, sea, road and rail.

Established in 1992, ITS Australia is an independent not-for-profit incorporated membership organisation representing ITS suppliers, government authorities, academia and transport businesses and users. Affiliated with peak ITS organisations around the world, ITS Australia is a major contributor to the development of the industry.

Key activities include convening national summits and international conferences, facilitating dialogue between transport modes and across government jurisdictions, promoting research and development and the export of Australian technologies.

ITS Australia advocates the application of communication, data processing and electronic technologies for in-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure and mode-to-mode systems to increase transport safety and sustainability, reduce congestion, and improve the performance and competitiveness of Australia’s networks.

ITS technologies include:

• In-vehicle systems – electronic stability control, lane detection, adaptive cruise control, intelligent speed assist etc.
• Vehicle-to-vehicle – intersection arrival, collision avoidance systems and emergency notification systems.
• Vehicle-to-Infrastructure systems – traveller information services (real time navigation, car parking and fuel availability), traffic signal and variable speed control, tolling and freight management systems.

Mission

Our mission, as the peak body, is to promote and facilitate collaboration and partnering amongst industry, government and academia in researching, developing and deploying ITS technologies.

What we provide for our members

ITS Australia is a membership based organisation which provides services and benefits to its members and the industry to help fulfil our mission. These services include:

• Organising and managing practical initiatives to support networking, knowledge, awareness and collaboration
• Presenting a single authoritative voice on ITS matters on behalf of our diverse membership
• Promoting the overall application of ITS and therefore the growth of demand for knowledge and services in the discipline
• Supporting initiatives promoting uniformity, consistency, interoperability and standards for the overall benefit of members
• Providing a central point for ITS related discourse, resource pooling and contacts
