Education information

As an Advanced Apprentice at Network Rail, you get more than just an education, you have three amazing years. The first is spent living and learning at Europe’s largest engineering training facility, the next two working from a depot local to home. Specialising in Electrification & Plant, Overhead Lines, Signalling, Telecoms,Track or Off Track you’ll receive expert training. Hands-on projects and dedicated support will ensure you gain the kind of skills that can set you up for life. It’s the beginning of an epic career journey that can lead on to diverse career options, including the chance to study for further qualifications such as HNC, Foundation Degree, BEng, MSC and CEng.

Whichever career path you follow, you'll spend your first year in the training centre at HMS Sultan, in Gosport, Hampshire. Home to Europe’s largest engineering training facility, it’s the ideal place to develop the technical knowhow and leadership ability you’ll need for the many exciting challenges ahead.

You'll be working towards an NVQ2 and BTEC, so there'll be a mix of academic work as well as hands-on practical experience. Your classes will be taught by a team of experienced rail engineers and professional trainers. Some of them have been through the Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme themselves, so they're also a great source of information and advice.

Year 1

Qualifications

  • NVQ2 in Performing Engineering Operations
  • BTEC National Award in Engineering
  • Institute of Leadership Management (ILM) Level 2

This is where you put your first year’s training into practice. Joining an engineering team at a depot close to home, you’ll get out and about on the network, learning alongside more experienced colleagues. There's lots to take in and a lot of responsibility to take on. But by the end of the scheme, you'll be set up for a great future and career with Network Rail.

You'll also be working towards an NVQ3 in Railway Engineering. This involves a combination of rail-specific technical courses, work experience and formal assessments. On top of this, you'll be going back to HMS Sultan for technical courses and leadership training, to prepare you for a career at the top of your profession.

Year 2 and 3

Qualifications

  • NVQ3 in Railway Engineering
  • ILM Level 3 in First Line Management

The three years as an apprentice is the beginning of an epic career journey that can lead on to diverse career options, beyond the scheme you can have the chance to study for further qualifications such as HNC, Foundation Degree, BEng, MSC and CEng.
