Job Summary

AECOM is currently seeking to hire Highways and Traffic Engineer to be based at Manchester.

You will be joining a highly successful and growing team at a time when our workload is increasing and our clients are giving us significant opportunity to be involved in strategically important schemes across the North West and North Wales.

Our Transportation team has a vacancy for a Highway Engineer with experience in the delivery of traffic engineering, local transport, urban design/streetscape and local authority/municipal highway schemes in the Traffic and Local Roads team in our Liverpool office.

The Traffic and Local Roads team provides concept and preliminary design, network modelling, detailed design, project delivery and construction management services on a wide range of projects for local authorities and contractors plus supports other AECOM business lines where their projects have a specialised traffic and highways interface.

Our team is actively involved in the delivery of projects and services to a range of both local and national clients including:

  • Liverpool City Council

  • Merseytravel

  • Knowsley Council

  • Transport for Greater Manchester

  • Manchester City Council

  • Warrington Council

  • Cheshire West and Chester Council

  • Stockport Council

  • Rochdale Council;

  • and many others.

Job Details:

  • Undertake traffic engineering studies from feasibility to preliminary design.

  • Assist in the preparation of fee proposals and contribute to major bids.

  • Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief.

  • Manage sub-consultants to produce deliverables against agreed timescales and in line with budget.

  • Sharing knowledge and supporting team.

  • Familiar with relevant Health and Safety regulations and to promote a culture of awareness within the team.

  • Following successful accreditation on the AECOM project management system act as a Project Manager including monitoring financial performance. Comprehensive training on AECOM’s project management system will be provided.

  • Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief.

  • Assist with the preparation preliminary or detailed design and project delivery of traffic engineering, local transport, urban design/streetscape and local authority/municipal highway schemes.

  • Assist with the preparation of detailed technical reports providing specialist technical contributions as required. Take an active role in the preparation of detailed technical reports providing specialist technical contributions as required.

  • Keep up to date with current best practice, techniques and innovation.

  • Support Senior Management of Traffic and Local Roads team.

  • Contribute to the preparation of detailed client briefs, fee proposals and major bids.

  • Develop new and existing client relationships.

Specific Skills Required:

  • Demonstrable ability in the delivery of traffic engineering, local transport, urban design/streetscape and local authority/municipal highway schemes.

  • Excellent technical and communication skills.

  • An ability to demonstrate experience and expertise in some or all of the following areas:

Traffic engineering/management design,

Cycling and walking design,

Traffic signal design,

Bus priority and BRT,

Road safety audits, analysis and design,

Traffic signing and way-finding.

Parking, road safety and public transport design.

Traffic Regulation Orders and parking,

Traffic modelling software (e.g. VISSIM, TRANSYT and LinSig etc.)

Preliminary and detailed design including 3D design

Applying relevant design standards including good working knowledge of DMRB

Leading single and multi-disciplinary projects as project manager/ task leader.

Preparation of technical reports and checking work/specifications of junior staff.

Liaising with clients, local authorities, utility companies etc. to obtain necessary approvals.

Detailed design software (e.g. MX, AutoCAD etc..

  • Whilst not essential any of the following skills would be desirable

Specialist traffic engineering knowledge.

Urban Design/Streetscape.

Project Management qualifications (e.g. PRINCE2)

Highways asset management and maintenance.

CSCS Card holder.

Minimum Requirements

  • Demonstrate experience and knowledge of developing feasibility and preliminary design schemes.

  • Knowledge and experience in some of the following aspects: cycling, walking, bus priority, traffic calming, parking and junction design, capacity assessments and modelling.

  • Knowledge of local and national design standards.

  • Use of relevant design software and/or capacity assessment modelling software.

Preferred Qualifications

A relevant degree or HND and will be working towards an appropriate Chartered status with membership of a professional institution.
