Mechanical Engineer (Burnaby, CA)

The successful candidate will work well with existing staff, is capable of independent work, and will support the development of Ballard’s fuel cell products.

Areas of responsibility for this position include:

  • Actively support / lead design of mechanical systems, including: sourcing and verification of mechanical components, rotating equipment, ventilation systems, fluid management, and mechanical layout of components
  • Generate engineering documentation for mechanical systems and components, including: component design requirements and specifications; design review and release materials; detailed test plans and conformity assessments
  • Develop cost effective designs that meet functionality, durability and robustness requirements
  • Interface with equipment suppliers, fabricators, and internal supply chain to source mechanical components
  • Lead failure analysis investigations on failed mechanical systems and components
  • Conduct trade studies and systems analysis for overall optimization of mechanical systems
  • Technical oversight of outsourced mechanical systems such as hydrogen purification, air delivery systems, and cooling systems
  • Support mechanical design during power generator commissioning both on site and in the field

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • Degree in mechanical engineering, electro-mechanical engineering, engineering physics, or a related field and 4 ~ 7 years of directly related experience
  • Experience in both an industrial and product development setting
  • Good knowledge of structural design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow design and selection of mechanical components
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to meet cost and functional requirements
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent written / verbal communication skills
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with dealing with outside vendors and fabrication shops

Additional Consideration:

  • Knowledge or experience with fuel cell technology
  • Ability to create Process & Instrumentation Diagrams
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar drafting software
