Job Summary

The Transportation Business Line of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented professional engineer to join our team of Traffic/ITS engineering professionals. The technical emphasis of the group is traffic design and operational analysis in support of planning, design and improvement projects in urban and transit-oriented locations throughout the DC Metro and northern Virginia. This position is located in our Arlington, Virginia office.

Our Arlington Transportation practice is a diverse, multi-disciplined, and dynamic group focused on providing collaborative, innovative, and holistic solutions to transportation planning, design, and improvement projects. The ability to work with other engineering disciplines at various locations, both internal and external to AECOM is a must.

The successful candidate will serve as a task leader and project manager on various projects with an opportunity to supervise junior level traffic design and operations professionals and will be involved with proposal development and engagement efforts. Strong emphasis will be placed on technical experience, high quality deliverables, writing and communication skills, and the ability to lead tasks and ensure delivery excellence with respect to budget and schedule. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established traffic design/operation oriented career in a variety of transportation projects.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Interact with multi-disciplined and multi-office teams.

  • Manage and perform the development of traffic engineering signal design, signing and pavement marking, and maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans and specifications.

  • Manage and perform traffic engineering studies including traffic safety, operational/capacity analysis, traffic impact studies (TIS), and preparation of signal timing plans in support of planning and design projects.

  • Prepare written reports and presentations of project findings for clients and support the progression of projects from initial concept through final design.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BA + 2 YORE or demonstrated the equivalency of experience and/or education

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with the ability to acquire registrations in Virginia and the District of Columbia

  • Progressive experience in Traffic Engineering and ITS systems

  • Strong proficiency with design packages: AutoCAD and/or MicroStation; and traffic operation analysis tools: HCS, Synchro, and VISSIM.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with DDOT and VDOT standards, process and procedures.

  • Strong knowledge of ITS with experience in analysis, surveillance, inventory and support of a variety of highway and Transportation Management Systems in order to design, manage and monitor the performance of electrical installations and transportation management systems.

  • Transit Operations Experience – Bus Rapid and Light Rail Transit system analysis; Transit Signal Priority System; travel time studies
