Lead Firmware Engineer (Cedar Rapids, US/Calgary, CA)

Job Summary:

Trapeze Group is looking for an experienced software developer with demonstrated knowledge of embedded systems for use in and by Mass Transit vehicle systems.

Job Description:

Ideal candidate will be able to work at all levels of the development process from Bare metal architectural design to long term support. C++ and Windows embedded software environments must be well understood and skill with many serial communications protocols will be required. Candidate must be able work closely with other Hardware and Platform software developers to provide a complete system solution for our customers.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide in-depth technical consultation and organization leadership in implementing short and long term strategies for assigned platform engineering team(s), transforming the strategies into prioritized initiatives
  • Balance a wide-range of initiatives and manage relationships with other IT leaders and product owners
  • Analyze highly complex business systems and be in charge of the technical backlogs to implement features and enhancements in an iterative way aligning with the enterprise strategy
  • Collaborate with existing core system technical teams to encapsulate the entities with appropriate modeling, service layers and partnering for application transition roadmaps
  • Ability to develop and publish detailed reference architectures, standards and guidelines pertaining to ingestion, processing, access and governance on project
  • Consult on major architectural designs to ensure consistency, security, maintainability and flexibility with respect to overall platform portfolio
  • Evaluates a wide range of technology trends, industry standards and best practices as part of a solution design and document the resulting designs, risk assessments and conclusions
  • Responsible for prototyping complex, cross platform business solutions to validate newer technologies
  • Provide cross-team guidance on best practices, software architectures and strategies that lead to cohesive software systems
  • Research and make innovative recommendations around new technologies
  • Participate in the evaluation and selection of hardware and software product standards
  • Participate during incident management events and provides consultative recommendations on viable resolutions
  • Deliver artifacts, technical alternative documents and architectural designs that meet business and product features. Effectively communicate designs and procedures in writing, defining and building repeatable and sustainable data and analytics solutions
  • Mentors staff to develop key software systems development skills and capabilities
  • Highly developed negotiation, consensus building and influencing skills, facilitation and the adaptability to respond to change quickly
  • Design, development, test, document and maintain project software
  • Design systems with an understanding of Power management, standalone operation, aperiodic communications, and data security
  • Participate in hardware and software design reviews, and support product testing and validation
  • Interface with suppliers and customers to resolve component and systems issues


  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer or Software Engineering or equivalent degree
  • 15+ yrs. experience in Embedded Software development in 'C++' language is required
  • Knowledge of real time embedded systems is required
  • Knowledge of Windows CE application and platform is required
  • Knowledge of network architectural components and IOT concepts and secure interface management  
  • Key strengths required include: leadership, team building, problem solving, analytic thinking, decision making, coaching, relationship building and adaptability
  • Architect system for most effective partitioning.  Familiarity with Microncontroller devices and development tools from TI MSP430/NXP PICs/ST Micro/ and others will be beneficial
  • Interface with Intel architecture/embedded PC environments.  Knowledge of PCIe, USB, SATA, and other standard PC connection interfaces


  • Wireless communication knowledge including WLAN and public communication such as GPRS
  • SAEJ1708/1587, SAEJ1939 interface knowledge
  • Ability to understand electrical design/schematics, and utilize electronic lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, etc.) for debug and troubleshooting embedded systems
