Sr. Hardware Design Engineer (Cedar Rapids, US)

Job Summary:

As the ideal candidate, you will have a strong educational background in networking and web server architectures. You will have experience with programming and setting up standalone embedded devices that can perform simple tasks, demonstrate a curiosity to how things work and interact with the world, and have a desire to be involved in all facets of product development from concept to long term support.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and understand new technologies/trends, assess the implications, opportunities and risks.    
  • Assist in defining, scoping and implementing new designs leveraging IOT concepts and technologies.
  • Lead all facets of new product development from definition of the new product architecture, to design, development, test, support, service.
  • Dissect problems to identify root cause of issue.
  • Provide detailed schedules, task identification and sequencing, test plans, and documentation necessary to yield high quality products that meet the customer needs.  
  • Help increase the technical capability and understanding of the team by mentoring, delegation, lessons learned and design review/oversight.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with internal and external entities.

Critical Requirements:

  • BSEE with 3-5 years of related experience in developing mobile computer systems running Windows and/or Linux operating systems. 
    • Digital and analog embedded system design experience with an understanding of Microcontroller architectures and power managed solutions.    
    • Experience with many standards based communications environments - RS232, J1708, SAE J1939, CAN, USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth, 802.11, Cellular, GPS. 
    • Expertise in design to meet environmental testing requirements including FCC part 15, SAE J1113, SAE J1455, EN 50155, EN 50121, DFM and DFT concepts. 
    • Understanding of the impact of integration of RF modules, and their effects on the PCB design,  noise mitigation strategies, antennas theory and testing through product certification.

Other Requirements:

  • Understanding of product development processes and the necessary components for product completion. 
  • Power systems design for vehicles and outdoors - Design for standalone operations.
  • Familiarity with diagnostics and test tools to quickly get to the root of the issues
  • Ability to identify estimate tasks, define WBS, assess and mitigate risk, maintain schedules and oversight of project deliverables. 
  • Excellent problem solving ability and focus on getting the job done
  • Tenacity and commitment to complete projects on schedule and within constraints agreed upon.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing business requirements and situations. 
  • Mentor Schematic capture and board layout tool familiarity.
  • Understand the interaction between electrical and mechanical interfaces to ensure successful package, heat dissipation, and environmental performance of the final product. 
  • Patent submission experience a plus
