As a specialist for professional communications systems Funkwerk focuses on the future markets with high growth potential. On the basis of state-of-the-art competence, a thorough understanding of the requirements of our customers, medium-sized flexibility and a quick response time for converting ideas into products ready for the market, we operate different target groups in our segments.
This requires leading technological competence and a thorough understanding of the requirements and infrastructure of our customers. Other features of the Funkwerk business model include concrete user knowledge, an investment policy that anticipates technological changes, small-scale flexibility and concomitant quick reaction time in terms of converting ideas into market-ready products.
Building on these foundations, Funkwerk has grown rapidly over the last years. Yet a dramatic increase in sales within just a few years has not led Funkwerk to abandon the foundation of its success. Of course, the business model has been further developed, refined and adapted to new structures, but the key factors remain unchanged:
Specialisation: Funkwerk concentrates its technological competence on emerging market niche with high barriers to entry and clearly defined target groups. Specialisation in user knowledge ensures that Funkwerk is customer-oriented and
has a competitive edge.
Innovation: We anticipate and exploit technological change in order to provide newly emerging markets with products in good time. We predict the consequences of future developments and upon which we base our new product ideas.
Corporate responsibility: Funkwerk employees share in corporate responsibility. An interdisciplinary organisational structure and a direct profit-sharing scheme reinforce individual responsibility.
Value management: Business success is analysed and monitored on an ongoing basis using methodical risk and value management. Here, technical competence and existing customer relations are indispensable for new investment.
On the basis of these principles, Funkwerk has single-mindedly developed and expanded its segments, Traffic & Control Communication and Security Communication. These principles form the strong common foundation of our corporate culture and market-oriented strategy development. Although the segments operate independently in their individual markets, the four combine to carry out joint action and form value creating synergies. Examples of this include standard cash management, harmonisation of production capacities between locations and technology transfer within the group via teams boasting maximum competence.
The “Funkwerk principle” also allows acquisitions to be integrated in order to enhance both technological competence and the customer base. The incorporation of new operating units can be completed successfully if a clear trajectory is established at the outset and employees are shown explicit appreciation. This is the recipe for success that has allowed Funkwerk to realise sustained dynamic growth even in times of general economic stagnation.
In the worldwide debate about environment, climate and energy efficiency, railways are gaining further in importance. Consequently, many European countries have begun to develop and modernise their rail networks to be able to compete with road and other transport networks. Funkwerk takes a leading position in many sectors of the global market as it provides technical solutions that meet the resulting requirements, including mobile passenger information systems. Helping shape the future of the railway is one of the key competences of Funkwerk.
The product spectrum of our Rolling Stock business unit includes mobile radio systems and passenger information systems.
Mobile radio systems today are crucial for rail operations. Wireless systems in trains ensure communication between train and stationary infrastructure, which is based largely on the digital GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communication - Railway) standard in Europe. Funkwerk is now at the forefront in this sector holding a market share of over 50 per cent in Europe.
Our latest product enhancement, the focX® handheld radio devices, is also geared to meeting the special market requirements of European rail operators. Its design concept provides a highly efficient technological platform for GSM-R mobile devices even in harsh environments.
Wireless passenger information systems are used for communication in the train enabling such aspects as passenger announcements, train conductors can communicate with each other and are at the same time in contact with the train driver and the operations control centre.
In Traffic & Control Communication, Funkwerk provides transport companies, carriers and the industry with innovative solutions that help rationalise and automate operations using professional communication, management and information systems to meet the increasing security requirement. With the cost pressure for transport operators generally on the increase, railway companies for local and long-distance transport both in Germany and abroad are key partners of this segment.
Our Infrastructure business unit primarily concentrates on stationary rail transport systems.
This includes such facilities as display and announcement systems in railway stations and on platforms which are used to provide passengers with up-to-date, comprehensible and understandable information about delays, disruptions, changes in the timetable, etc. Funkwerk offers all types of display and announcement technology used to provide passengers with travel information.
Funkwerk further supplies innovative timetable planning systems and operations control systems for road and route management .
Telematics systems from Funkwerk are used for the management and control of mobile devices in transport and logistics. It includes aspects such as perpetual vehicle location; digital communication between driver and dispatcher; route planning; the dispatch of vehicles and shipments with regard to aspects such as working periods; the monitoring of route and job completion; the collection and prompt transmission of job data to job entry and accounting systems connected via standardised interfaces. The driver is aided by the navigation provided and can be trained to drive in ways that preserve precious resources using the documentation on vehicle handling available.
The system solutions from Funkwerk enable operators of vehicle fleets such as transport service providers, intra-company transport, field services or special fleets (e.g. winter service vehicles) to monitor and manage their fleets so as to save costs.
Our Security Communication business unit comprises professional communication solutions with integrated emergency call and messaging functionalities. As the leading provider of professional personal security systems based on TETRA, DECT and GSM technology, we address the industry, public institutions, penal facilities as well as the hospital and service sector as our target markets.
The established GSM distress signal systems from Funkwerk use the wide-range public GSM wireless network to ensure that these systems also work in remote places. For work areas with increased risk of explosions, Funkwerk has specially developed explosion-proof GSM-ex devices that meet the most stringent security standards.
Since organisations and businesses with security functions increasingly work with digital trunked radio, known also as the TETRA standard, Funkwerk has developed and markets TETRA radio equipment with special functions.
Dedicated versions for environments with greater risk of explosions are certified to meet the stringent requirements of the ATEX Directive. These devices are approved for use in highly sensitive areas with increased security requirements. Our DECT handheld device for security tasks combines telephony with personal distress signal and monitoring functions. The DECT Secury system recognises a wide range of risk situations and immediately triggers an alarm that is sent to the control station.
In the growth market for comprehensive property protection, Funkwerk has gained a solid position at global level thanks to a range of reference projects.
Funkwerk’s complete range of electronic security systems includes intrusion protection, access control and video monitoring. The system works reliably even under extreme conditions such as major temperature fluctuations, sand and the risk of explosions. Experts believe that energy supply in particular is one of the key areas where security aspects will play an ever increasing role in the future.
