London could greatly reduce congestion if the city emulated the New York model for open data, claimed Karhoo. By taking advantage of New York’s publicly-available anonymised data, the company was able to identify the impact of taxis and private-hire vehicles (PHVs) on traffic flows, congestion and pollution. Hauling passengers on a 40-foot city bus has never been glamorous. But Ryan Timlin could at least see the potential back in 2006, when he was earning nearly minimum wage at a St. Paul hardware store and hungry for a change. A friend who worked at Metro Transit, the public transportation agency for the Twin Cities, convinced him that driving buses meant good pay and a stable future. So Timlin donned the striped Metro uniform and got behind the wheel, ferrying passengers around Minneapolis and St. Paul every day for 11 years.

People across the UK are being urged this week to show their support for buses. Hundreds of organisations will come together to demonstrate the vital role their bus plays in their communities at the start of Catch the Bus Week 2018. Catch the Bus Week – spearheaded by Greener Journeys – aims to raise awareness of the vast economic, environmental and social benefits of taking the bus. The initiative, now in its 6thyear, urges passengers, bus operators and local authorities to work together to encourage the switch from car to bus.
