Sr. Hardware Design Engineer (Cedar Rapids, US)

Job Summary:

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in architecting, designing and developing rugged, industrial computer solutions.  The candidate will embrace a broad range of responsibilities from concept and proposal generation to roadmap definition and product execution. The successful applicant will be effective interfacing within the engineering team and other departments, dealing with  the demands of development of new products while supporting the continued delivery of the existing offerings. 

Job Description:


  • Lead all facets of new product development from definition of the new product architecture, to design, development, test, support, service
  • Assist in requirements gathering, creating new product concept proposals with innovation and technical vision and planning development activities with Cross functional teams
  • Provide risk assessment and mitigation strategies
  • Help increase the technical capability and understanding of the team by mentoring, delegation, lessons learned and design review/oversight

Critical Requirements:

  • University degree in Computer Science, Engineering Science or equivalent
  • 10 years of related experience in developing mobile computer systems running Windows and/or Linux operating systems
  • Digital and analog system design experience
  • Background with Intel Architecture based embedded computer systems a good understanding of Microcontroller and FPGA development environments
  • Experience with many standards based communications environments - RS232, J1708, SAE J1939, CAN, USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth, 802.11, Cellular, GPS
  • Expertise in design to meet environmental testing requirements including FCC part 15, SAE J1113, SAE J1455, EN 50155, EN 50121, DFM and DFT concepts

Other Requirements:

  • Mentor Schematic capture and board layout tool familiarity
  • Understanding of product development processes and the necessary components for product completion
  • Power systems design for vehicles and outdoors - Design for standalone operations
  • Familiarity with Diagnostics and test tools to quickly get to the root of the issues
  • Ability to communicate and work with multiple internal and external customers
  • Ability to identify estimate tasks, define WBS, assess and mitigate risk, maintain schedules and oversight of project deliverables
  • Tenacity and commitment to complete projects on schedule and within constraints agreed upon
  • Understand the interaction between electrical and mechanical interfaces to ensure successful package, heat dissipation, and environmental performance of the final product
  • RF design experience would be a plus
  • Develop and submit patents and provide innovation leadership
