Faiveley Transport has signed an agreement with Stadler Pankow to supply HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditionning) systems for the new Berlin S-Bahn trains that will operate in the German capital.
This agreement was signed at InnoTrans, the world’s leading trade fair for transport technology, which took place in Berlin between 20 and 23 September 2016.
As part of a framework contract for up to 1,380 electric multiple unit cars, 106 new Berlin S-Bahn trains were initially ordered in December 2015 by DB Regio subsidiary S-Bahn Berlin to Stadler Pankow in consortium with Siemens. These trains, which comprise 10 pre-serial and 96 serial trains, consist of 85 four-car and 21 two-car sets. They will be used on the Ringbahn (circular railway) and southeastern lines of Berlin, and will be equipped with air conditioning, new to the city.
Under the terms of the agreement, Faiveley Transport will be in charge ofthe design, engineering, manufacturing and extensive testing of the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning) systems for passengercompartments and driver cabs. Specific design developments will be made to the HVAC systems to take into account the restricted space available due to the track gauge of the Berlin rail network.
Engineering, prototypes and type testing will be managed by Faiveley Transport’s site and HVAC Centre of Competence in Leipzig, Germany, while series manufacturing will take place at Faiveley Transport’s site in the Czech Republic. Delivery is expected to start in 2017 and be completed in 2023, with frame contract options until 2029.
Olivier Ravit, Faiveley Transport’s Energy & Comfort Division President, said,“With some of our systems already supplied to the Flirt single deck and KISS double deck trains, we have a long and close relationship with Stadler Pankow. This agreement will allow us to further develop our collaboration while providing reliable and custom-made solutions, and to reinforce our position as the number one supplier in the HVAC market. With our Centre of Competence located less than 2 hours from the German capital, we are proud to be part of this iconic “new trains from Berlin for Berlin” project.”
