Barcelona lays out plan to support recovery of mobility after lockdown

The Barcelona City Council has announced it is in the process of adapting the city in order to support the recovery of mobility, with a view to the future gradual lifting of restrictions associated with coronavirus (COVID-19).

The municipal government has drawn up an action plan, alongside Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B: SM), with urgent and immediate measures to ensure that citizens can move with the best possible safety conditions, while promoting collective, sustainable and non-polluting modes.

The aim of the plan is to apply formulas for the city to reactivate its day-to-day life in a safe way to prevent new infections and, at the same time, to avoid a transition from public transport to private vehicles.

In the coming days, actions will begin to be implemented in public space with an investment of € 4.4 million with the aim of being ready once restrictions have been lifted.

To ensure safety on foot, 12 kilometres of street will be reallocated for pedestrian use on Avinguda Diagonal, Gran Via, Via Laietana and the streets of Consell de Cent, Rocafort and Girona.

Measures will be implemented to make public transport safer, with 17 interventions to improve bus lanes, the development and promotion of a disinfection and hygiene protocol and the promotion of teleworking and flexible hours so as not to congest services.

21 kilometres of bike lanes will also be put into service on 10 roads in the city to encourage cycling. In these spaces, a vehicle lane will be replaced by a bicycle lane or a bicycle lane and public transport route.
