UITP has recently aligned its Sustainability Charter to the new global sustainable development agenda that was agreed last month in New York by national governments. With the United Nations launching a ground-breaking set of global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the public transport sector has a newly relevant framework to guide their strategic priorities and efforts towards society – representing a huge opportunity to drive sustainable business practices within the sector.
The UITP Sustainability Charter helps public transport organisations to manage change so that their organisation continuously evolves to be more sustainable and viable in the long-term.
The Sustainability Charter acknowledges the work of UITP members' contribution to sustainable development and the value of public transport undertakings measuring and reporting on their relevant corporate sustainability (CSR) policies, practices and achievements.
In doing so it helps public transport organisations to manage change so that their organisation continuously evolves to be more sustainable and viable in the long-term. By joining the Charter, UITP recognises their leading role within the sector on corporate sustainability practices and reporting. To date, around 125 public transport organisations are part of the dynamic network which is helping to raise awareness of the sustainability benefits of public transport at international events.
Public transport organisations will play an important role in implementing the SDGs, so by aligning the Charter to them, governments can better recognize the true value of public transport’s contribution to the wider sustainable development agenda while also helping the sector drive efficiencies and innovation at the corporate level in support of the goals. By developing tools to global sustainability standards UITP can help play a key role in facilitating action and partnerships on the ground to implement the SDGs through the Charter.
UITP will promote the Charter network’s contribution to climate and sustainable development agenda as key part of the ‘solution agenda’ for transport at COP21 in support of the UITP Declaration on Climate Leadership.
In doing so, this can ensure linkages between their business strategies and the SDGs which can also make a real and concrete contribution to climate action. It is because of this that UITP will promote the Charter network’s contribution to climate and sustainable development agenda as key part of the ‘solution agenda’ for transport at COP21 in support of the UITP Declaration on Climate Leadership.
