Parkeon, Inc., a global provider of smart city transit and parking systems, announces that it has executed an agreement with Metro Transit (Minneapolis/St. Paul) to supply an off-board fare collection system for Metro Transit’s newly created Bus Rapid Transit system. Parkeon has revolutionized off-board fare collection by offering transit agencies a proven, all-weather, low cost ticket vending machine (TVM) called the Strada connected to flexible back-office management tools.
By implementing an off-board fare collection system, Metro Transit hopes that riders will have a faster trip and an improved experience. TVMs at stations will allow customers to purchase tickets before boarding, fareboxes will no longer be necessary. The new TVMs will offer 25 to 30 percent faster boarding time than today’s regular bus service. Buses will be able to make fewer stops and help stay better in sync with traffic flow.
The Strada TVM features a 7″ full color screen display and the ability to print multiple fare types in the same transaction. These machines will accept coins, tokens, bills, credit/debit cards, and Metro Transit’s coupons, and are Buy America compliant. The Strada is connected to Parkeon’s myFare back-office system for reporting and remote configuration changes.
“We are very appreciative that Metro Transit selected Parkeon for this exciting project,” said Benoit Reliquet, President of Parkeon, Inc. “Our system offers a great combination of flexibility and robustness and we are confident that riders in the Twin Cities will be very happy with the solution.”
The initial deployment includes 82 Strada TVMs that will cover the A-Line Arterial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line. The agreement includes options to expand the system to an additional two planned BRT lines with the potential for 240 Strada TVMs.
