Passenger traffic on Russian Railways’ network increased by almost 5%

According to the latest figures, in May 2019 the infrastructure owned by Russian Railways transported 102.8 million passengers, 2.1% more than during the same month last year. Suburban passengers amounted to 93 million, an increase of 0.9% on May 2018, while long-distance passenger numbers were up 15.3% to 9.8 million.

Passenger turnover was 10.4 billion passenger-kilometres in May, 2019, 6.1% more than in May 2018. Suburban passenger numbers increased by 1.3% to 3 billion pass-km, while long-distance passengers rose 8.2% to 7.4 billion pass-km.

From January to May 2019, the infrastructure of Russian Railways carried a total of 465.9 million passengers, up 4.9% compared to the same five months in 2018. Long-distance passengers were up to 41.1 million, an increase of 6.8%, while passengers using suburban train services amounted to 424.8 million, a rise of 4.8%.

Passenger turnover on the Russian Railways network has increased by 3.4% since the beginning of 2019 compared to the same period last year and amounted to 44.1 billion passenger-km. Suburban passenger turnover was up by 4.9% to 13 billion passenger-km. Long distance passenger turnover stood at 31.1 billion pass-km, an increase of 2.8%.

During January-May 2019, the Moscow Central Ring (MCR) transported almost 58.2 million passengers, an increase of 15.9% on the same period in 2018. Passengers made about 11.9 million trips in May, an increase of 9.8%.

In total, more than 325.1 million passengers have used the MCR’s services since it began operations on 10 September 2016. The MCR set a record for the highest number of passengers transported on one day since its opening when 561,956 people travelled on 3 April 2019.
